After five years of simmering tensions on the
Korean peninsula, the Korean War began on
June 25, 1950, when the Northern Korean
People's Army invaded South Korea in a
coordinated general attack at several
strategic points along the 38th parallel, the
line dividing communist North Korea from the
non-communist Republic of Korea in the
south.

Japanese Occupation (1910-1945):
•Korea was under Japanese
occupation from 1910 to 1945.
•At the end of World War II in 1945,
Japan surrendered, leading to the
liberation of Korea.
Division of Korea (1945):
•The Allies, particularly the United
States and the Soviet Union, agreed to
divide Korea along the 38th parallel.
•The Soviet Union occupied the
northern part, while the United States
occupied the southern part.
Korean War (1950-1953):
•Tensions between the two Koreas
escalated, leading to the outbreak of the
Korean War in 1950.
•North Korea, with the support of the Soviet
Union and China, invaded South Korea.
