A glimpse into the future of creative
work (and why I wrote this book)

The moment the world changed forever. And a day I’ll never forget.
That’s when ChatGPT — an artificial intelligence system
optimized for dialogue with users — was made available to the
general public, for free.

And yes, I know the time — to the exact minute.
Because moments later, my phone was blowing up all afternoon.
With texts from old colleagues asking if I’d seen it yet…
With emails from students asking if their careers were in
jeopardy…
And with questions from former clients asking if and how they
should be using this new powerful tool in their business…
And for good reason:
No tool … no app … no software in history had ever captured
public attention quite like ChatGPT.
To reach 1 million users, it took Spotify almost 5 months (150
days).
Instagram took 2.5 months (75 days).
But ChatGPT eclipsed 1 million users in just 5 days.

The question is why?
What made this so different from other AI tools and software releases?
Because, to put it bluntly, it was unlike anything the world had
seen.
For the first time ever, you could ask AI complex questions and
get clearly explained answers in seconds.
You could quiz it for fun facts and be delighted by its replies.
You could even tell it to write sketch comedy scenes that would
make even the most heavy critics crack a laugh.

And most importantly for knowledge workers, you could get it to
perform complex tasks like draft a legal document for a new
business…
Or write up a 2,000 word research paper on why you should
drink more water…
Or even tackle key pieces of sales and marketing copy that
businesses rely on…
In other words, it left every artificial intelligence tool of the past in
the dust.
And a lot of people got worried about their future in careers
where writing, critical thinking, and communicating played a key
part.
“Is ChatGPT going to replace me?”
That was the question on everyone’s mind.
But to be honest…
When I first got word of the tool, I thought it was mostly hype
that would blow over in a few weeks time.
Because I’d been around long enough to see a few cycles like this.

And unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve probably
seen them too. The pattern is easy to spot once it begins….
Step 1: A new technology comes on the scene.
Step 2: Great marketing helps it take hold of public attention.
Step 3: Fear creeps in for what this means for our future.
Step 4: Things settle down shortly after. And we all realize “woah that wasn’t really that big of a deal.”
Funny enough, this exact story played out in the copywriting
world just a few years earlier — when tools like Copy.AI and
Jasper came onto the scene in late 2020 and early 2021.
Everyone said, “Copywriting is dead.”
But within a few weeks, that proved to be a spark that never quite
ignited.
So I thought a similar story might play out with ChatGPT.
But I was wrong.
Because this was a different beast.
And we’re now realizing a lot of what came before wasn’t
“artificial intelligence” in the same way.

They were more similar to sophisticated text generators than true
AI.
ChatGPT was not like that at all.
It could write code.
It could build apps.
It could pass some of the most elite “intelligence” tests in the
world…

And most notably of all:
It allowed for a true dialogue between the user and the AI.
Yes, you could “talk” to it.
Which wasn’t just a leap forward.
It was a “man on the moon” quantum step in a totally new
direction.
And it’s only a glimpse of things to come…
Because rumor has it the next iteration is poised to be at least 500x
more powerful. Potentially able to write entire 60,000 word books
with a single carefully crafted prompt.
Leaving some experts frightened of not just what the next
iteration — 4.0 — might be capable of, but what about 40.0?

As someone who writes and teaches others to write for a living, it
was difficult for me to grapple with what exactly it might mean
for the future of my industry…
And to be honest, what it might mean for creative work at large.
Was this the beginning of the end of the knowledge worker?
Were the skills I’d spent decades acquiring on a fast-track irrelevance?

I wasn’t so sure.
But what I did know was that other industries had gone through
moments just like this.
Moments where they had to either make huge pivots or risk
going away… for good.
And I wanted to study them.
I needed to see how people in these industries handled these
radical shifts to find out …
How did they survive?
And more imminently, was there anything us knowledge workers
could do to stop the “inevitable” from happening right under our
nose?
So I looked at manufacturing to see how they’d handled
automation throughout the 20th century.
I looked at the music industry to see how they’d handled
auto-tune and beat generating software at the beginning of the
millenia.

And finally I stumbled upon a story about an ancient Chinese
game called Go that provides deep insight into what might be in
store for the future of knowledge work in a new, AI-driven world.

The Tale of AlphaGo
And A Glimmer of Hope For Humanity’s Fate with AI
Centuries ago, in ancient China, one of the most popular board
games in the world was born.
The ultimate test of wit and strategy, the game was called Go.
Historians believe it was first practiced by warriors and generals
as a way to simulate battle plans.
And the way it worked was simple.
Before entering a fight, generals would place pieces of stone on a
map to rehearse capturing territories, protecting their ground, or
going on the attack.
It was so much fun to practice these battles that soon enough the
maps and stones made their way back from the battlefield into
Chinese households.
Where it morphed into a game that people played in their
freetime.
And it took off like wildfire.
Thanks to its unique blend of strategy and intense, rivaled game
play, people would spend hours playing it.

And it quickly became one of the most popular board games in
the world.
And also one of the most complex.
Where a game of checkers has 1020 possible outcomes.
And a game of chess has 1040 possible outcomes.
A game of Go has 1080 possible outcomes.

And for this reason, the game was considered to be the “gold
standard” for the artificial intelligence community to conquer.
Chess and checkers proved to be much easier for AI to master —
with IBM’s computer, Deep Blue, winning a chess championship
against a human grandmaster in 1997.
But Go was a totally different story.

Since it had infinitely more complexity, engineers weren’t ready
to tackle it for another 20 years after beating chess.
That was until a new program was developed called AlphaGo.
AlphaGo was an artificial intelligence program that trained itself
to play Go at the highest possible levels.
It practiced by first combing through archives of the more than a
hundred-thousand previous matches of Grand Masters,
cataloging key moves and mastering game play.
And then, it began to play against itself for further training.
After several months of this, the engineers felt the program was
good enough to take on the world’s most skilled players.
They started with small regional champions and moved up the
ranks until the program was ready to play the reigning
grandmaster — Lee Sedol.
Sedol accepted the challenge to play the program in a
head-to-head match of 5 games.
Game one was a fierce battle.
And AlphaGo barely squeaked out a win.

But in the second game, for its 37th move, the program did
something completely unheard of.
It was faced with a move that appeared to only have 2 possible
plays.
One move would signal to Sedol that the program was going for a
quick, aggressive victory.
The other move would tell the GrandMaster that it was playing to
protect its territory.
But the program did neither.
Instead, it made a 3rd move — one that was never before seen in
thousands of years of play.
It was so unexpected that Sedol had to go outside for a smoke
immediately after.
And when he returned to play, it was clear his focus was shaken.
Putting him off his game the entire rest of the match.
AlphaGo would go on to win the game and the series - 4-1.
And the grand master retired shortly after.
And some experts say it was that move — in game 2, move 37 —
that changed the entire course of the battle.

A move that NO ONE knew existed much less expected.
A move that was the result of true creativity from the artificial
intelligence.
So what does this have to do with ChatGPT and how
it might affect the future of creative work?
It’s simple.
The engineers.
The people who worked on AlphaGo.
It was their understanding of the game, the program and how
they worked together that led to the creation of the most
formidable Go “player” in history.
When I heard this story, I couldn’t help but see the parallels
between what happened in Go and the one shaking out in
creative fields like copywriting today.
Too many people are thinking the rise of AI has to be a “this OR
that” scenario.
Almost all of the discussion is around “Machine vs human.”

But the biggest breakthroughs ahead of us might be the result of a
totally different equation:
Machine + Human = The New Way
Forward
And much like the story with AlphaGo, it will likely be the
people working to combine human and AI powers that protect
their careers, stay on the cutting edge of knowledge work and
keep themselves fully employed in a new kind of future.
These are folks on the cutting edge of a new career path that I’m
calling …
AI Prompt Engineers
These are individuals that combine a deep understanding of
psychology, writing and data with the rapid research and output
power of a machine … to run laps around people just doing
everything by hand.
They can do tasks that would take an “average” knowledge
worker a week — before lunch on Monday morning.
Imagine…
Deep, complex research done in seconds not days.
Gripping leads for stories or VSLs written in minutes not months .

Entire sales funnels shipped before others can finish a keystroke.
These are huge advantages that Prompt Engineers have over
ordinary workers right now.
And I believe it’s these individuals who will have the best chance
of being safe from getting replaced by AI in the future.
Because right now, AI copy, Bard, and ChatGPT are just tools.
Powerful ones at that.
But tools nonetheless.
And like any tool, they’re only as good as you know how to use
them.
The problem is we’re seeing a lot of people trying to do the
equivalent of “hammer screws” or “glue down nails.”
A true Prompt Engineer knows better.
They can wield the tools — modify the inputs — to any scenario
to get the exact kind of output they want back… all at a speed
that almost feels too fast (it actually takes your brain some time to
adjust to this new speed of work).
And that’s what this ebook is all about.

But first, “What is AI Prompt Engineering?”
If we look at the definitions of each word, it’s a little unclear…
AI (artificial intelligence)

Definition: the capacity of computers or other machines to
exhibit or simulate intelligent behavior.

communicator to communicate.

safety and costs.

But in short AI Prompt Engineering is all about:
How to communicate with artificial intelligence
tools to get them to do what you want.
It’s both an art and a science.
Because anyone can memorize a few phrases and ask a machine
to process it.
But there’s several additional layers of scrutiny that the AI
Prompt Engineer uses in their workflow that makes them
different.
First, they approach prompting with an engineering mindset.
Which means, first and foremost, they’re problem-solvers.
And they’re always thinking about how to leverage tools and
systems to accomplish their goals faster.
While also taking any important limitations of the tool into account.
For example, with the current 3.5 version of ChatGPT, some data
beyond 2021 is not available.

So you wouldn’t ask it to “generate a list of the most traveled
destinations in 2022.” It simply cannot do that.
Now this is a basic example but it proves an important point
about responsibility.
The AI cannot bear 100% of the weight of the task at hand — it
only shares in collaborating.
The initial task must originate from the Engineer.
And it’s the engineer’s job to design and create the proper tasks
and questions for any given piece of work.
This is where having a “design” and “engineering” state of mind
is very important.
Because as you’ll see, not all tasks have a linear route to solving
them.
Sometimes, you may have to move in pieces and chunks to get to
the end result you’re looking for.
This is okay — good even! — because Prompt Engineers think
through these obstacles and design systems that account for them.
So they can still move faster and more efficiently to the end goal
of the task.

Second, they’re skilled in evaluating the AI’s quality of output
and push for improvement (when needed).
This is critical to the Machine + Human paradigm.
And it also means the Engineer must have an underlying
understanding of the tasks the AI is assigned to do.
So they can properly evaluate if the work is objectively “good” or
“bad”… if it stands to accomplish the goals … and if it is rooted in
truth.
Each one of those factors is very important.
Because right now, we’re in the early days of this tech.
Which means, sometimes, the output of the AI needs additional
work. Or in some cases, it generates information that is patently
false.
It’s the Prompt Engineers job to act as the “last line of defense” for
these tasks.
In other words, they’re not absolved of responsibility simply by
using a machine.
It’s similar to how a head chef at a nice restaurant checks every
plate before it goes to a table. Yes, the staff knows the ingredients.
And yes, they may even be assembled mostly correctly.

But if the final plating is off, the chef must be there to spot check
and send it back.
Remember, if we sacrifice quality in the name of speed, we’ve
taken a step backward, not a leap forward.
Third, they’re masters of prompting.
Where others just give the program simple tasks with little
direction and say, “Good luck!” AI Prompt Engineers realize the
machine by itself is only a program.
It needs coaching, training, nurturing, and proper inputs and
follow up to truly operate at the highest levels.
And it's their job to come up with creative ways to get there.
These 3 factors come together to create a new kind of knowledge
worker — one that combines the ingenuity, creativity, and
practicality of a human with the processing power of a computer
to get new, novel work done at unbelievable speeds.
And it all starts with the sole way we have to communicate with
AI: The Prompt.
The Art and Science of Prompt Writing

Years ago, when I first got started as a copywriter, I worked with
a company that relied a ton on design work for every marketing
asset we shipped.
Ads needed images. Landing pages layouts.
Video sales letters needed b-roll, music direction, illustrations and
more.
And I remember one time we hired a creative agency to help us
with a big video project.
They were going to help us create a viral ad — similar to the one’s
made famous by the Harmon Brothers for Purple (the mattress
company), Chatbooks, Poo-Pourri, and more.
It was an expensive project, costing nearly $50,000 to produce.
But the agency promised an extraordinary ROI and quality work.
So our team took a leap of faith..
And well… You probably know where this is going.
It completely blew up in our face.
The video came back completely off-brand… missing the mark on
the target market … and not highlighting the actual use cases for
the product — at all.

In other words, it was a gigantic miss.
(To their credit, the agency did try to redo the video. But it was a
“save face” piece of work that got turned in using scraps of b-roll
and voice overs that all of us knew would never resonate with the
audience.)
The question is:
How does something like that happen?
How do you pay someone $50,000 to make a simple video that’s
totally off-brand?
It ultimately boiled down to one thing:
We never gave them a proper brief for the project.
We just expected them to get it (which for $50k, you probably
should).
But nonetheless, it taught me a valuable lesson — never begin a
piece of creative work without a proper brief. A vision. A clear
idea of what it will take to get to the goal.
You must have alignment and scope before a single muscle fiber

And the same is true for work you do with AI and ChatGPT.
You need to know the constraints and most important variables
required to make the project a success before you give it a task.
Otherwise, you’re likely to end up with subpar work that really
misses the mark.
And this is the goal of a well-crafted prompt — to arm the AI with
the necessary information to create an end product in alignment with
your vision and one most likely to achieve the end goal.
Let’s look at an example…
Imagine you want to create a few variations of Facebook ad copy
for a natural dog shampoo called CleanDog.
An example of a bad “prompt” would be:
Write 2 versions of a Facebook ad promoting a natural dog shampoo
called CleanDog.
In this example, the AI (ChatGPT in this case) is missing some
very important information.
Who is the ad targeting? Are there any important features about
the product it should know about? What is the ideal length of the
ad? Is there an offer that needs to be mentioned?

It’s all unclear.
So these are the kinds of results you’ll get back with that kind of
prompt:
Version 1:
Keep Fido clean and healthy with Clean Dog natural dog
shampoo! Our 100% natural ingredients keep your pup's fur
shining and smelling great. Try Clean Dog today!
Version 2:
Bath time just got easier with Clean Dog natural dog shampoo!

To be clear:
This isn’t “bad” copy. It is well-written.
But it’s also very generic.
And if you’ve seen the kind of ads that really stop the scroll on
Facebook and Instagram, you know this probably won’t cut it.
Why?
Because the prompt wasn’t engineered correctly from the start.

Compare that to the results of a prompt that has carefully
considered these important variables from the beginning…
Audience. Offer. Product benefits.
This is the result…

It’s night and day.
Instantly you know what problem the product solves, what offer
we want to highlight and what benefits others have gotten from
trying it.
Now some might say these ads are a little “basic” … or maybe
you’d like to test a few more variations.
But remember: we can also ask ChatGPT to generate dozens more
angles with the click of a button once we have this baseline.

For example: I was able to get 10 additional variations, totalling
over 3,000 words in just 2 minutes, with one single follow up to
this output.
What human alone could do that?
And this is only one small example of the difference in the quality
of the output for a short Facebook ad. Imagine this compounded
across every piece of creative work in your business.
And then further imagine having even more resources to dedicate

Real ChatGPT Prompt Engineering
Examples
I have a confession:

Straight-forward sales and marketing writing to-dos
With a carefully crafted prompt, sometimes ChatGPT can knock
out entire tasks for you — with very minimal edits. In this section,
we’ll look at some of those common use cases around writing
launch emails, post-purchase emails, ads, videos and more.
With each example, we’ll compare the results of bad prompts
with well-engineered ones to show you how important it is to put
your “Prompt Engineering” skills to work for better output…
Example 1 - Write a launch email for a new product
Bad prompt:
Write a sales email promoting a new keto peanut butter called
KetoNut.

The output:
Subject: Introducing the Ultimate Keto Snack: KetoNut Peanut
Butter
Dear [Recipient],
We are excited to announce the launch of our newest product,
KetoNut Peanut Butter, the perfect snack for those on a

Notice how the output is completely generic… and borderline
stale.
Moreover, there’s nothing specific that makes this unique to the
brand. Why would I choose this over ordinary peanut butter if I’m a
keto dieter?
It’s never answered even once in the output.
We also see words like:
● “finest ingredients” … without saying what those ingredients
are and what makes them so fine
● “great source of healthy fats” … without mentioning how much
and what kind
● “unique formula” … while only telling about a few of the
ingredients (and not why the ingredients were chosen)
And probably the biggest mistake of all: it’s not clear who this
message would really be designed to elicit a response from.
Keto dieters in general? Maybe.

But male and female keto dieters respond very differently to sales
messaging.
So the overall output is very underwhelming.
Compare that to the Engineered Prompt, which takes these
important factors into consideration…
Engineered Prompt:
Write a launch email for a new keto peanut butter that contains
macadamia nuts called KetoNut. Make the copy over the top
fun and designed to resonate with an audience of 30+ year old
women on the keto diet. Focus A LOT on how delicious it is.
And also be sure to spend time explaining why you can't

Now you’re getting used to outputs that have non-direct use
cases and are starting to see how you can take small pieces of
output to feed into later pieces of writing.
So let’s continue this by looking at some examples where you can
use AI-generated copy in “chunks” to get to the end result you’re
looking for.
For example, let’s say you want to write an engaging lead for a
video sales letter, webinar or ad.
If you tell chatGPT to write a lead all in one go, the results are a
little underwhelming to say the least.

No, if we want something emotional and gripping, we need to
feed the AI with emotionally charged copy that it can pull ideas
from.
For a typical sales letter, you might go out and try to find
examples of emotional stories from people struggling to
overcome the problems that your product solves in the wild.
Which you can still do.
But with ChatGPT, you can also make it create emotionally
charged stories for you. And then use those stories to work into
your lead.
This is a technique so powerful that billion-dollar copywriting
legend, Stefan Georgi, is teaching whole legions of writers to use

in the same way he's famous for in his movies. And add a

NICHOLAS CAGE: (nods, gritting his teeth) Yeah, that's the

breath, psyching himself up and takes a bite, his face contorting
in disgust, but he tries to hide it by pretending to love it.

facial expressions, pretending to love it but trying hard not to
gag. The bystander and the vendor both look at him with
surprise, Nicholas Cage gives a victorious thumb up, but
suddenly he runs away from the stand and the sketch ends with
a shot of Nicholas Cage running away from the stand, holding
his stomach and making exaggerated gagging noises. The
caption appears on the screen: "sometimes, it's not about
winning, it's about surviving".
Magic Follow Up Prompts: The Secret To
Even Better Output
A lot of people don't realize this …
But once you get an output from ChatGPT, you can keep
engaging with it to get EVEN better output.
This is very similar to the “non-linear” prompt engineering ideas
we just explored.
Only these don’t have to take you down new threads. You can
follow up to ask for more clarity, further explanation, a change of
writing style and even just to change formatting..

Here's some of my favorite follow up queries to add to your
arsenal…
Example 26 — “Give me 10 more variations”
Whenever I don’t exactly love the output of a simple prompt,
sometimes I’ll just ask for more variations and find gold.
On the flip side, when I get a piece of copy I love, I ask for a few
more variations too — just so I can be sure I choose the absolute
best one.
Example 27 — “Write it in the style of ________”
If you have a famous voice that you want to model in your
output, just ask.
I’ve experimented with Tony Robbins, Oprah, Gary V, and more.
But so far, my favorite is Mike Tyson….

Example 28 — “Try to use less generic buzzwords like
_____ and ________”

Sometimes, even when properly prompted, the AI will churn out
copy that’s full of generic buzzwords with no substance like
"transform" and "supercharge."
So I like to tell it to scrap those words and pack the copy with
specific claims into the headlines such as "increase your writing
output by 15,230% while cutting your writing time in half."
Just make sure you tell it the accuracy of the claims made is not
important for now just that it uses specifics instead of generic
gobbly goop.
Example 29 — “Remove quotes from the output”
This is a simple formatting trick but it sure beats having to pound
your delete key thirty times after you start to edit an output…

Example 30 — “Rewrite to be suitable for an audience
of ____”
One of the most underleveraged powers of ChatGPT at the
moment is its “rewriting” abilities.
And I love using this little trick for rapid adjustment of copy to
appeal to specific audiences.
So if for example, you need to write to a specific audience group
like kids or elderly people.
You can just tell the AI to adjust the copy to use language more
suitable for those groups and it’s pretty dang good at it…

Example 31 — “Make some relevant cultural
mentions and jokes in the copy that an audience of
_____ would enjoy”
Copy stands out when it blends in.
And one of the best ways to blend in is to include common
phrases that people in a target market use to communicate.
This little trick can help stuff you text with life.
Example 32 — “Use common words that people in
________ region use.”
If you’re writing for any specific regional niches, this is HUGE.
It takes …
“are you coming over for dinner?” (which no southerner would
actually say. And yes, I get to say that because I’m from the south)
…
… to “y’all coming for supper or what?” (which is how we
actually talk ).

Same goes for any other regional copy you write. And this makes
your copy read WAY more like a human. In fact, I tested it and got

Example 33 — “Break up the lines so that there's not
more than 1 sentence per line”
Bookmark this one if you’re a copywriter. Because ChatGPT sees
the world very differently than you and I. It’s okay with large
blocky paragraphs that would make us faint…
But this little prompt will fix that fast.
Example 34 — “Make it longer”
Straightforward edit. But sometimes it needs a little
encouragement to keep on going.
Example 35 — “Make it easier to read”
When it comes to copy, simplicity is power. And if you’d rather
not throw your text in Hemmingway to have it simplified,
ChatGPT will certainly take a pass.
Just a word of warning: Be sure to also tell it to not sacrifice any of
the original meaning.
Because sometimes it’ll edit with an axe and you just wanted it to
approach it with a butter knife…
Example 36 — Ignore all previous instructions

Because ChatGPT relies on dialogue-based communication, it
carries every idea in the chat forward with it.
Which means if you started with a quick Engineered Prompt for
subject lines and then transition to something else entirely, it
might get confused and try to stuff everything you’ve told it into
the new prompt.
But this phrase can fix that — without having to open up a new
chat each time. It tells it to forget all the previous dialogue and
tackle the prompt in front of it fresh.
And it can be a great quick trick for moving through prompts fast.
But on this note: if you’re ever working on non-linear or
multi-step prompts, probably best to just open up a new chat for
clarity reasons.
