Activity: On a short coupon bond, paste a magazine or newspaper cutout of any photograph that
depicts an issue or problem in science and technology. Then answer the questions that follow:
Retrieved from: https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Agriculture/Philippinesstirs-controversy-with-genetically-modified-rice
a. What is the issue or problem depicted in the photograph?
Answer: The issue depicted in the photograph above is about the controversies regarding the
genetically modified, nutrient-enriched Golden Rice. Controversies mentioned were: (1) that Golden
Rice as a solution to the Vitamin-A deficiency is just a smoke screen for big business to gain more
profit; (2) Planting Golden rice requires an overreliance on the use of herbicides and pesticides which
ordinary farmers cannot afford; and (3) local famers believe that methods in raising geneticallymodified rice tries to get rid of the tradition planting methods.
b. How does this particular issue or problem affect the well-being of humans today?
Answer: This issue affects the well-being of humans, particularly Filipino farmers, because it involve
their way of living. There is a possibility of the traditional farming methods will become obsolete
once the Golden rice is accepted by the general public and thus results to a shift in the schemes of
rice farming in the country.
c. Why is it important for people to study and learn about STS as an academic field, especially in
addressing the issue or problem depicted in the photograph?
Answer: STS is an important academic field because it helps us understand some emerging concepts
and processes in science and technology despite its technicalities. Through STS, we eradicate our
personal biases and misinformation towards an issue so that we can look at its impact at an objective
and truthful perspective. In the case of the Golden rice, STS address this issue because we learn about
genetically modified food and its importance, and identify false information regarding GMO.

Assignment:
1. Define Science, Technology, Society
Answer:
Science – refers to the study of the natural world, is a body of knowledge that is retrieved using a
series of methods which includes observation, experimentation, and analysis.
Technology – refers to the application of the scientific knowledge to different aspects or purposes in
order to make work easier and meet the needs of the people.
Society – refers to the group of people living together and engaging in social interaction inorder to
achieve a common goal
As a whole, Science, Technology, Society (STS) is an academic field that explores the interplay
between science and technology and its social impacts. Its goal is to explore the relationship between
scientific knowledge, its applications, and the needs and responses of people in the society in order
to address specific issues that arise relating to the subject matter.
2. Differentiate Science and Technology
Answer: Science is the knowledge that is explored through an organized series of methods (known
as scientific method) which includes observation, experimentation and analysis. Meanwhile,
Technology refers to the application or the use of this scientific knowledge to different purposes in
order to solve real-life problems and meet the current needs of the people.
